Dan Jones: Reboot the Republic

In his new article Reboot the Republic, Unity2020 supporter Dan Jones compares our current predicaments to those of the founding fathers. He begins:

In 2020 as in 1776, America must begin with independence, and from that higher vantage point of peace and tranquility, work together on a plan for a better nation. This time around, it’s not an oppressive monarchy we’re declaring independence from, but it might as well be.

The Republican and Democratic parties have become every bit the corrupt, plundering agents of destruction any despot could endeavor to be. Only by capturing the White House and delivering it into the hands of two capable patriots from our political Left and Right flanks can the worst elements of our two parties be effectively neutralized.

Why Unity2020 is spoiler-proof

One of the most innovative aspects of the Unity2020 plan is how it avoids becoming a third-party election “spoiler.”

The Unity2020 plan has not one, but two failsafes that prevent spoiling the election. Both are described in this 90-second video:

First, our plan is carefully designed to draw equally from disillusioned voters in both political parties.

If you take the number of voters who self-identify as “independent,” and then add all the potential voters who are currently disengaged from the election process altogether, we could create a voting bloc representing as much as eighty-six percent (86%) of the country.

Second, if it becomes clear our Unity2020 ticket has no viable path to the White House by a predetermined date, we will pull the plug and all voters can return to their previous corners.

With Unity2020, there is no reason to have to settle for voting for the “lesser evil” in this election. This year let’s vote, instead, for the greater good.

What is Unity 2020?

After decades of neglect, our country is in crisis, our government has been captured, and cynicism dominates the public mind.

Unity 2020 is a plan to save our republic, by drafting and electing two highly capable and courageous patriots, during the 2020 US Presidential cycle.

How it works

One candidate will be from the political left, the other from the right. A coin-flip determines who runs as President and who runs as Vice President.

They must agree to work as a team, making all decisions together, wherever possible. After four years, they switch roles. They continue in this way until one has served twice and is ineligible to serve as President.

The plan was developed by Princeton fellow Bret Weinstein, and is described further in this 13-min interview with The Hill:

No third-party “spoilers”

Central to the Unity 2020 plan are two failsafes, to prevent spoiling the election.

First, it is engineered to draw equally from disillusioned members of both political parties. If you take the number of voters who self-identify as “independent,” and then add the potential voters who are currently disengaged, we could create a voting bloc representing as much as eighty-six percent (86%) of the country.

Second, if a Unity2020 ticket has no viable path to the White House by a predetermined date, we will pull the plug and all voters can return to their previous corners.

These safeguards are described in more detail in this 90-second video:
